Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2026
Westmead Hospital Foundation proudly joins communities across Australia in celebrating National Volunteer Week 2026 and recognising the extraordinary contribution volunteers make across Westmead, Cumberland and Auburn Hospitals.
Volunteers play a vital role within our hospitals and health services, offering compassion, comfort and practical support to patients, families, visitors and staff every day. Whether assisting patients to navigate the hospital, providing companionship during difficult times, supporting visitors, or simply offering a reassuring smile, volunteers help create a more welcoming and compassionate healthcare environment for everyone.
Westmead Hospital Foundation is proud to work in close collaboration with the Volunteer Services teams across Western Sydney Local Health District and support the important work they do to engage, coordinate and celebrate volunteers throughout the District.
As part of National Volunteer Week, volunteers were recognised at a special morning tea organised by the District Volunteer Services team. The event provided an opportunity to thank volunteers for their dedication, generosity and ongoing commitment to supporting the community. Westmead Hospital Foundation was also pleased to provide small gift packs to volunteers across the District as a token of appreciation.
General Manager of Westmead Hospital Foundation, Dinidu Illangakoon, acknowledged the significant impact volunteers make within the hospital community.
“Our volunteers give so much of themselves to support others during some of life’s most challenging moments. Their kindness, compassion and willingness to help make a genuine difference to the experience of patients, families and staff across our hospitals. We are incredibly grateful for everything they do and proud to support and celebrate them during National Volunteer Week.”
National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and this year’s theme, Connecting Communities, recognises the power of volunteering in bringing people together and strengthening communities.
