Lymphoedema Clinic

Thanks to the Joyce Anderson Lymphoedema Research Award, a new pilot clinic at Westmead Hospital is offering life-changing care for patients living with lymphoedema—a common and often overlooked side effect of head and neck cancer treatment.

New Clinic Brings Hope to Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Led by speech pathologist Lydia Natsis, the clinic takes a unique approach by addressing both external and internal swelling, including within the throat, which can severely impact swallowing and quality of life.

Traditionally managed by physiotherapists, this new model offers more comprehensive care tailored to the complex needs of cancer survivors.

Lydia Natsis – Leading Innovation in Cancer Recovery

Lydia Natsis, Senior Speech Pathologist at Westmead Hospital and Clinical Lead for ENT/Head and Neck Oncology across Western Sydney Local Health District, has been awarded the Joyce Anderson Lymphoedema Research Award to pilot a ground-breaking new service.

Her project introduces a Speech Pathology-led lymphoedema clinic for head and neck cancer patients—an innovative model that addresses both external and internal swelling, including issues that impact swallowing and daily function.

Lydia’s work is paving the way for more holistic, patient-centred care for those recovering from cancer.
