Billy's Story

Two-Time World Boxing Champion, Billy Dib announced last month that he had won the greatest fight of his life, against cancer and is now in remission.

Over the past five months, Billy has been fighting an aggressive and rare form of cancer called non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his stomach, followed by gruelling rounds of chemotherapy at Westmead Hospital.

On learning of his cancer diagnosis last year, Billy said, “Even though I have won world titles and I am an accomplished athlete, I never for once said ‘why me,’ I always said, ‘why not me’ as I am no better than anyone else, and we are all children of God.”

In addition to the love and support of his family and friends, Billy also credited the team at Westmead Hospital’s Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Ward, C5a for his excellent care during his treatment.

As an inpatient in C5a , Billy said, "Each and every one of these nurses and doctors have been second to none."

“They’ve gone above and beyond to make sure that I’m comfortable.”

Support Westmead Hospital's Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Ward, C5a

Westmead Hospital's Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Ward, C5a treats more than 800 patients a year for blood cancers and disorders like Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Multiple myeloma, Aplastic anaemia, and Haemophilia.

Westmead Hospital's Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Ward is a world leader and centre for excellence for blood and marrow transplantation.

We are one of the only places in Australia treating patients with immune effector cells (CAR T-cells), where we an genetically modify the patient's own immune cells to target their cancer. Our medical team are world leaders in this innovatve technology.

Although currently only available as a treatment option for a small number of diseases, there is a lot of research happening with CAR T-cell therapy and we are expecting to see much more activity in this space very soon.

We we also have a busy Clinical Trials unit which offers clinical research trials to haematology and transplant patients in western Sydney. The unit participates in a significant number of trials and works collaboratively with other clinical research groups.

To support the work we do and patients like Billy Dib, we ask you to please give generously to Westmead Hospital's Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Ward, C5a.

Thank you for your support.
